Conservation Genomics for Grasshopper Sparrows for Species Recovery

Dr. Stephanie Gray
$200,000.00
The Florida Grasshopper Sparrow is listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. This project aims to develop and apply genetic tools to aid in the recovery and assessment of the status of this song sparrow. This effort will include the genetic fingerprinting and sexing of captive-born sparrows that are released into the wild and the genetic fingerprinting of unknown individuals sampled from the wild. These DNA fingerprints will be used to estimate relatedness and other demographic variables that will aid our understanding of the status of the population.

Monitoring Hydrology and Assessing Wading Bird Habitat in Coastal Areas of Everglades National Park
National Parks Service
National Audubon Society, Inc.Dr. Jerome Lorenz
$60,457.00
This project was created with the goal of increasing the range, redundancy, and resiliency of 14 federally listed plant taxa endemic to South Florida Pine Rockland through population introductions or augmentations across private and publicly owed lands. Non-listed species of ecological value will also be incorporated into introduction plans to increase available habitat for the federally listed Bartram S Scrub-Hairstreak. Habitat restoration may be conducted prior to introductions depending on the quality of the recipient site. Best introduction practices will be refined via experimental introductions wherever appropriate. In addition, public outreach and education for private landowners will be achieved via the creation of an all-in-one online resource in the form of a Pine Rockland owner S manual. Finally, project partners, including but not limited to the coastal program and the Institute for Regional Conservation, will collaborate to develop a peer-reviewed publication focusing on the model of reintroducing federally listed species to Pine Rockland habitat post restoration. At the conclusion of the 5-year initiative, it is expected that greater amount of federally listed Pine Rockland plant species will be closer to recovery while the footprint of high-quality Pine Rockland habitat will be closer to recovery while the footprint of high-quality Pine Rockland habitat will have increased.

Reintroducing Listed Plants to Privately-Owned Pine Rocklands in South Florida
U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens
Dr. Jennifer Possley
$25,000.00
In South Florida, the globally imperiled Pine Rocklands ecosystem has been reduced to a fraction of its former extent, imperiling dozens of plant and animal taxa. Outside of Everglades National Park, invasive plants and lack of periodic fire has caused extensive degeneration of extant habitat, which has only been partly ameliorated by resources-strapped management. Pine Rockland patches are scattered across the landscape, with a tremendous amount of variance in size composition, conditions, and ownerships federal, state and local, non-profit, private. It is well known that the composition of Pine Rocklands changes from north to south, with different suites of rare species present in different regions. Due to differing site histories, responses to disturbances and degradation yield different conditions necessitating different restoration techniques and approaches. Previous work by The Institute for Regional Conservation (IRC) has demonstrated that degraded sites can be placed onto a trajectory of recovery using innovative approached focusing on measurable restoration targets e.g., percent cover of invasives, native hardwoods, palms, and groundcovers stems per acre of slash pine trees. New occurrences of federally endangered species have been recorded, and populations long suppressed have begun to revive.
